A Conversation with Greg Crimmins
Series: Pushing Paper
Solo Show on view July 18 - July 25, 2021
KP: What is your background? How does it inform your art?
GC: I have been heavily involved in the arts since I was a child. My parents collected from galleries all over, primarily folk art, but they opened me up to all forms of creativity. I was also fortunate to have lived in many cities including Atlanta, Boston, and New York. Being exposed to a wide variety of art, cultures and lifestyles cultivated my persona today. Those experiences forced me to evolve with every twist and turn, and that evolution is prominent in my work. I'm constantly adding on to who I am.
KP: What was your process with compiling this body of work?
GC: My latest series, Pushing Paper, stems from my love for the substrate. While obtaining my degree, I realized how diverse paper could be. I wanted to see how far I could push myself as well as my creative process. Utilizing as much recycled material as possible became a main focus in the series. Many of the frames and substrates have past lives that add to the viewers experience.
KP: What messages can viewers take from your body of work?
GC: As I delved into topics revolving around space, time, and our place in the universe, 'Pushing Paper' grew in an unexpected direction. I want the viewer to step outside of their own existence and immerse themselves in the grandeur and beauty of our universe.
KP: Is your work influenced by a place, if so where and how?
GC: The series starts with earthly topics. From the ground up, expanding to the stars, this linear visual journey takes the viewer from conception to transcendence.
KP: Professionally, what’s is your main goal as an artist?
GC : I want to give back to the world in the most beautiful ways I know. Being adopted from an early age, and gifted a chance to live my best life, I feel that it is my purpose. I'm entirely grateful to be alive and to have a talent to give back with.
KP: What does this artwork mean to you? How are those ideas expressed in this artwork?
GC: When starting the series, I wanted a reason to freely express concepts that I had yet to delve into. It's the first body of work that I've been able to create anything I desired. While it was a large objective, it opened me up to think and create differently. I'm always searching to grow and I believe that is present in each piece of this series. From one piece to the next, the viewer can experience that growth themselves.

KP: How does it fit in (or not) with the rest of your artwork?
GC: This series was a fluid transition from my past works, and led into my future inspirations as well.
KP: Any additional information you’d like to share?
GC: Thank you for immersing yourself in my world.
