R. Bonar “kinky twenty”

Bio

Born in 1982 in Surakarta, Bonar studied Fine Arts in ISI Surakarta (Fine Arts Institute of Indonesia). In 2009, he co-funds the duo group thedeoMIXBLOOD in Jogjakarta. Bonar is focused on javanese history and myths as well as issues about religion, fashion and identity. thedeoMIXBLOOD consistently uses toys as a medium to convey notions and visual shapes of the ideas they work on. They chose toys as toys are the second world after the real world, as anything in the world has been made into toys. Lately, thedeoMIXBLOOD have been working on a new project developping local folklore and legendary figures into action figures. Since 2016 until now, Bonar's activities focus on creating murals in public spaces and custom toys workshops.

javanese culture - Series

The root of a strong civilization is the creation of unique, organic and authentic local elements which are then passed down from generation to generation. This noble heritage is usually practiced symbolically through body language, dance, music and images in terms of color, sound, movement and supporting elements related to the ritual practice. The idea of embodiment is usually taken from the activities of life in the Universe, both visible and invisible. For this competition, I would like to introduce Javanese culture through the artistic form of images of Javanese wayang (puppets) characters, named Gareng, Petruk, Semar, Bagong and Javanese dances, named Jaranan and Kuda Lumping. Then, I correlate ideas and shape deformations about the symptoms of social and environmental global issues. I use some titles in Javanese because if they are translated into other languages, the philosophy of the message will also change its meaning. The existence of a culture shows the history of a rich civilization that was built and created in the world.
